Yellowstone Square Dance Council

Members of the Yellowstone Square Dance Council dance at the 60th annual Knothead Jamboree in 2015, at the Old Faithful Inn, the jamboree’s original venue.

Every year, an energetic bunch of Billings residents renew their resolution to have fun. The Yellowstone Square Dance Council says there is more than enough fun to go around, and the community is invited to share it during a beginner square dance program at MetraPark’s Cedar Hall from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17.

In a press release, the group said they are people who enjoy not only their shared activity, but also each other. There’s always a lot of laughter at events and attendees may even fulfill a couple other resolutions.

The skills practiced while square dancing are some of the same skills recommended for people to stay balanced physically, mentally and emotionally. Once dancers get moving, it’s not unusual for them to dance two miles in an evening.

Anyone resolving to travel more can also take advantage of square dance festivals, conventions and cruises all over the country and world. Dance calls are always in English, making it easier to square dance anywhere. Upcoming events include the 2020 European Square and Round Dance Convention in Sigtuna, Sweden.

At the beginners dance, no experience or special attire is required. Square dancers should dress in comfortable clothes and shoes. Ages 12 and older are welcome. Cost is $7 per person.
