Good Eats: Scotch ale at Canyon Creek Brewing

Brewer Ron Kalvig of Canyon Creek Brewing

Brewer Ron Kalvig still hasn’t decided on a name for his scotch ale, one of the first brews to come out of the taps at the new Canyon Creek Brewing on Billings’ West End.

What: Scotch ale (possibly to be called Cold Creek)

Where: Canyon Creek Brewing, 3060 Gabel Road

What makes it special? This is one of the first beers brewed at Billings newest brewery, which opened on Dec. 20, 2013. Head brewer Ron Kalvig has been brewing beer for friends and family for the past 15 years and folks kept bugging him, “When are you going to open your own brewery?” Kalvig said most of his beer is pretty conservative, but he had long admired the Cold Smoke beer, brewed by Kettlehouse Brewing in Missoula. He chose to change his up a bit, giving it a roastier, more malty taste. “It almost tastes like coffee,” Kalvig said. Which is weird because it doesn’t have any coffee in it.

Extras: Hours for the tap room are 2 to 8 p.m., seven days a week.
