Bernice McDermott, 87, of Billings, died quietly in her sleep, surrounded by her family on Friday, Nov. 5. She was born in Sunburst, Mont., in December, 1922, to Pat and Viola (Price) McDermott. The family moved to Billings in 1924, where Bernice graduated from Senior High School.

Bernice began her 50 year career as a licensed cosmetologist in 1950 and shortly thereafter purchased the Elite Beauty Shop where she specialized in the latest trends of the 60's, 70s and 80s. During those years she established a loyal clientele that stayed with her throughout her career.

Bernice was very active and enjoyed many years of bowling in the MWBA. She was known for her artistic nature which came out in her paintings, ceramics, floral arrangements and her home.

She had a flair for style and enjoyed shopping at every opportunity. She loved to host family barbecues and was always available to share a cold one with friends while playing a good game of cards.

Bernice was a devoted aunt to her nieces and nephews who loved spending time with her on weekends.

She was also very generous when it came to loaning out her blue '72 Chevrolet Impala convertible.

Bernice loved to travel and enjoyed the Big Apple, the giant Redwoods in California, and the blue Pacific Ocean of Hawaii.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Francis, Ralph, Edward, Peter, and Frankie; and great nephew Chad Bushman. She is survived by her sister Hazel Bushman; nephews Duke (Shirley) and Verne (Audrey) McDermott who were like brothers to her; and many other nephews, nieces and a large extended family who will miss her. The family would also like to thank Louie Watt and his family for being a good friend and neighbor.

Visitations will begin at 11 a.m. Monday morning, Nov. 8, at Smith Downtown Chapel, 925 S. 27th Street and a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at Smith's Downtown Chapel.

Interment will follow at Mountview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Chad Bushman Memorial Scholarship Fund.
