BIG TIMBER - Carrie L. Bird Brannin, 98, went to be with her Lord on Nov. 1, 2008, at the Pioneer Medical Center, Big Timber. Carrie was born on July 15, 1910, in Pipestone, Minn., to Ralph and Lucy Morley Bird. She was the second of seven children born to Ralph and Lucy. Carrie's early years were spent in Illinois. The family moved to Harlowton in July of 1928. Carrie graduated from high school in Harlowton in 1929.
Carrie's first job was at the McFarland Ranch in Two Dot. This is where she met her beloved husband, Lewis Brannin. Lewis and Carrie married on Dec. 29, 1930. Carrie continued to cook for ranch hands for many years at the McFarland Ranch, the W.H. Donald, Sr. Ranch, and the American Fork Ranch. Her challenges included feeding hungry ranch hands without modern conveniences, making comfortable loving homes in harsh rural settings for her family, and learning to tolerate isolation and endless wintry winds.
To the union of her marriage to Lewis Brannin were born three children: LaVelle Brannin of Big Timber, Ivanelle (Carroll) White of Rhodes, Iowa, and Stanton L. Brannin of Big Timber.
Carrie enjoyed and cherished her seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandsons. She also enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and collecting dolls.
Carrie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother and two sisters.
At Carrie's request, no services will be held, however, a light lunch will be held 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Melville Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Carrie's name can be made to the Melville Lutheran Church, Boulder Meadows Assisted Living or to a charity of one's choice.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
