On Jan. 7, 2012, my angel went to heaven to join extended family, friends and loved ones after a brave, long fight against cancer. David Cletus Schmidt, 53, was born May 31, 1958, to Walter Richard and Marie Cecile Schmidt in Huntington, N.Y. They moved to Billings in 1974, where he graduated from West High in 1976. He and his father actually started the first soccer league in Billings. When his family moved, he stayed in Billings.
He met Linda Betts in 1986. They were married on May 26, 1990. He was blessed with his loving Sleepy Dog and many nieces and nephews.
Dave was a hard worker that gave his all to the job, from A&W as a kid to Gambles, Coast to Coast, C&R Small Engines and Billings Hardware Co.
He had a passion for playing pool, loved soccer, model cars, playing games, family, friends and kids. He was an active member and president of the F.O.E. and Moose. Special Oly had a place in his heart. He loved the parks and traveling. He especially loved traveling to Yellowstone Park, Thermopolis trips and the many cruises with his family. He enjoyed dressing as Santa and seeing all the kids reactions. Many special nieces and nephews will remember him as their Santa on Christmas Eve.
He is survived by his wife, Linda, parents Walt and Marie, sister Linda Lackner (son Kenny), brother Steven and Claire Schmidt, all of Florida; brother Keith Schmidt of Washington; sister Jennifer and Larry Stieglitz (Glenn and Gillian) of New York; Sandy and Curt Schlosser (Eugene, Austin and Kayla), LaDonna and Mark Grotbo (Brice and Kelby), and Kelly and Bart Heiken (Isabell).
We will always love you and miss you forever. A very special thanks to Journey Hospice, Jan and Vern Brost, and many, many others.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m. at Smith's Downtown Chapel. A dinner and reception will follow at the Eagles Lodge in Billings Heights.
