David W. Martin, Sr., was born in Gallatin Gateway on July 17, 1938, the fourth of seven children of Thomas and Helen Coop Martin. He passed away peacefully after a prolonged illness on February 6, 2019.
David attended Dean Elementary and Absarokee High School. In 1962 he married Betty Hauge and together they had two children, Brenda and David, Jr. (He and Betty later divorced.) David resided in Absarokee until his death.
He will be remembered as a man of strong will who believed in an honest day’s work. At a young age he began working in construction, operating heavy equipment across the state, and later started his own company, DWM Construction. He was well-respected in his field and knew every detail about building a proper road. He embraced opportunities to hunt, fish, trap, and explore the great Montana outdoors. Many weekend mornings were spent driving the backroads watching for game and enjoying time with friends. David shared his passions of fly-tying and fly-fishing with his children and grandchildren.
Dave knew how to have a good time and lived life to its fullest with his family and wide circle of friends. He was a kind spirit always willing to help anyone in need. He truly loved his community and will be missed by everyone that was fortunate enough to know him.
David was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Helen; his daughter Brenda Martin Kinsey; and brothers Theodore Martin and Richard Martin. Surviving David are his son David Martin, Jr. and daughter-in-law Shawn; his brothers Keith (Kathryn), Robert, Chuck (Maggie), sister Mary Hudson (Duane), sister-in-law Judy Martin, and many nieces and nephews, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In keeping with David’s wishes, a graveside service and celebration of life will be held on May 11, 2019, at Nye Cemetery at a time to be determined. Memorials in David’s honor may be made to the Nye Community Center.
