ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Dennis Wayne Calkin (77 years old) of Alexandria, Virginia passed away on Dec. 1, 2018. Dennis is survived by his wife Dana Jo (Swecker) Calkin (of Leesburg, VA); his daughters Tiffany Froman (of Costa Rica) and Heather Chettiar (of Virginia); his grandchildren; and his sister Ann (Calkin) Davies (of Chinook, MT).
Dennis was born on May 8, 1941 in Billings to Ronald Wayne Calkin and Gertrude Maria (Beeler) Calkin. Directly after graduating from Billings Senior High in 1959, Dennis enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) Reserves. He graduated from Eastern Montana College in Billings and went on to receive three masters’ degrees from Eastern, Georgetown University, and American University.
As a photographer for the Billings Gazette in the early 1960’s, Dennis developed a sense for adventure as he raced from factory fires to political rallies and state fairs, capturing local events, life, and culture. He carried this courageous spirit to Mexico and Central and South America, where he traveled and worked for the next 15 years.
In 1979, Dennis returned to the United States to attend his high school class reunion, during which he reunited with his childhood classmate, Jo (Swecker) Calkin. Jo and Dennis tied the knot and migrated to Honduras where Dennis worked in Tegucigalpa. In 1983, the family moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina and later Alexandria, Virginia, where Dennis held positions in the U.S. Federal Government. We will always remember Dennis for his charismatic storytelling and love for adventure.
