COLUMBUS — Eileen Davey passed Monday, Dec 3. Eileen was born Oct. 1, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Edward and Dorothy McCaffrey. She attended Our Lady of Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, California, for a short time, but soon returned home. While working at Creighton University, she met her future husband, Michael Eugene Davey - 'Gene'.
After marrying in Omaha, Eileen and Gene moved to Gene’s hometown of Columbus and Gene joined the family business - Davey Motor Company. Eileen was a very proud mother of seven children and raising them was her priority. Once the older children became teenagers, she found her second true passion – snow skiing.
When the snow was flying, the norm was three or four trips each week to Bridger Bowl outside Bozeman, a mere 232 miles round trip. If the roads were clear, the Ford station wagon was difficult to catch at 100+ mph.
Eileen watched as her children scattered east to west. She very much enjoyed visiting all in locations much different from Columbus. She continued to ski until she reluctantly retired the skis after celebrating her 84th Birthday.
Eileen loved working in her yard (and any neighbors that needed attention) and running a rescue shelter for any stray cat, dog, rabbit, fox, skunk or raccoon that found themselves homeless in Columbus. They shared the rock house which Eileen proudly called home.
She is preceded in death by her husband Gene and her sister Dodie Cleasby. She is survived by her sister Mary Jane Harvey and brother Owen McCaffrey. She will be greatly missed by her daughters Mary Bliley (Chip), Teresa Hawkins (Tom), and Dorothy Davey; her sons Mike (Maureen), Joe (Nancy), Mark (Joan) and Timothy; her grandchildren Paul, Mark, Katie, Scott, Phil, Robert, Thomas, Heather, Timothy, Molly, Mark, Michael and John; and her eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, 2018 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Columbus. Rite of Committal will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Columbus. Condolences for the family may be shared at smithfuneralchapels.com.
