Elaine Baskett Mueller was born in Stoughton, Wis., Aug. 29, 1918. She expired May 7, 2003. She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. L.W. Baskett of Big Timber. Her mother had returned to her home as her husband was in France in WWI. He did not see his daughter until he returned from Trier, Germany, in 1919. The family then returned to Big Timber at that time.
Elaine graduated from Sweet Grass County High School in 1935 and from the University of Montana in Missoula with a BA in music in 1939. She married Chas G. Mueller of Deer Lodge in 1940 in Big Timber. Mr. Mueller entered the Foreign Service and he and Elaine spent 30 years at various U.S. embassies in South and Central America and the Far East. Elaine was an excellent pianist and even taught piano in many cities where they were stationed. The Muellers retired to Big Timber in 1973 and moved to Billings in 1989.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She is survived by her three children, Arthur (Buzz) of Helena, Christine (Tudor) of Portland, Ore., and C. Nicholas of San Diego; brother, L. McLean Baskett of Livingston; four grandsons; a niece and two nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Congregational Church in Big Timber on Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m. A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, 11, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, downtown Billings. Memorials may be made to The Parkinson's Society Foundation, the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
