SAN JOSE, Calif. — Florence Rose Kuffner McCarvel died peacefully on June 10, 2014, in San Jose after years of struggling with Alzheimer’s.
Florence was born on March 7, 1921, in Anaconda — child of immigrant Croatian parents. Hers was a life carved by the ideals and celebratory nature of her ethnic heritage: hard work, good food, Tamburitza music and lots of love. She taught in one-room school houses before marrying her high school sweetheart, John (Jack) McCarvel, in 1943. They shared 59 years together and raised seven children. Florence's foremost gift was as a homemaker and mother, but she gave generously of her spare time to school and church activities. The greatest joy of her life was time spent with her family.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband Jack and daughter Kathie Grmoljez. Survivors include children Carol (Kirwin) Werner, Ronan; Tom (Janeen) McCarvel, Helena; Mary (Rich) Helgeson, Billings; Becky (Paul) Gillick, San Jose; John (Paula) McCarvel, Denver; Patty Pimentel, Henderson, Nev.; son-in-law Dr. Paul Grmoljez, Billings; 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate Florence's wonderful life was held in San Jose and burial in Anaconda. Memorial contributions can be sent to the Kathie McCarvel Grmoljez Scholarship Fund, Carroll College, Helena, MT 59625.
