Francis M Gerrells, Jr. "Whitey" passed away peacefully at Billings Clinic at the age of 81.
He was born on Oct. 12, 1929, in Fromberg, to Francis Marion Gerrells and Elizabeth McCormick , the youngest of eight children. He attended school in Fromberg, graduating in 1948. After graduation, he moved to Billings and worked at the Northern Hotel, where he met Virginia Kolstad. They wed on April 17, 1950. This union lasted 14 days short of being 61 years. He worked various jobs: Pierce Packing, Billings Dairy, Better Feed, Stockman Cafe, and then put in 40 years with the Labors Union. He was a member of the Elks Club for several years, an avid bowler, Little League coach and a member of Mended Hearts. He was proud of his Scottish/Irish heritage and a member of the Caledonian Society, and participated in parades and the Scottish games, especially throwing the Caber. He enjoyed watching football, basketball (Boston Celtics) and wrestling.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Francis Aron, Lester, Ed, Tom; and sisters Helen and Anne. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughters, Kathy Reinhardt (Jim) Cheryl Rivera (Kim) of Billings; and son Clifford Gerrells of So. Paris, Maine; grandchildren Mickey and Mel Reinhardt, Samantha and R.C. Whitmore, Marisa Haring and Cassandra Rivera; great-grandchildren Hunter, Shelby, R.J., Riley, Kayleigh, Payton, Kaydence and Trinitie; and sister Roberta (Dennis) Whittenberg in Tennessee.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday, April 8, at Smith Downtown Chapel, located at 925 S. 27th St.
