Billings resident Freeda Hauff was called home to her Lord and Savior Dec. 21, 2009 at the age of 91. Freeda was born in Fox Valley Saskatchewan July 9, 1918, the daughter of Frederick and Marie Ponto. When Freeda was two years old the Ponto family moved north of Maidstone, Saskatchewan where she started school. Later Freeda’s family moved to Lashburn, Saskatchewan where she continued her education. In the fall of 1937, Freeda went to Agassiz, British Columbia to be with her older brother. Freeda then found work and moved into Vancouver. Freeda later moved to Golden, B.C. and found work at a tourist court.
During the winter of 1939 Freeda traveled to North Dakota where she had a sister. Soon after arriving in North Dakota she met her then to be husband. Freeda married Ben Hauff of Anamoose, N.D., on Sept. 26, 1940 at Knox Church Manse, Lloydminister, Alberta.
Ben and Freeda moved onto a farm south of Drake, N.D. and farmed there until 1958. After moving off the farm, the family lived in Drake for several years before relocating to Billings in 1965. Freeda worked for Mountain Bell Telephone in Billings until retiring in 1983.
Freeda loved the Lord and was devoted to her family. Ben and Freeda were married for more than 69 years. Freeda is survived by husband Ben of Billings; son Al (Dee) of Sheridan, Wyo.; daughter Bonnie (late Arlon) Peda of Billings; eight grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Freeda is also survived by her sister, Alice Klinger of Lashburn and numerous nieces and nephew and is preceded in death by both parents; four brothers and four sisters.
Mom, grandma, you will be missed greatly. Our family will not be the same without you. We are relieved to know you are no longer in any pain.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at Smith West Chapel. Visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 27, at Smith West Chapel, 302 34th St. West. Interment will be in Terrace Gardens Cemetery. Memorial to the Boys and Girls Ranch.
