ROSCOE - Gladys Ellen Jensen, 84, passed away Nov. 24, 2008, in her sleep, at her home near Roscoe.
She was born on the Butcher Creek homestead on March 31, 1924, to Anunda and Andrew Espeland. They later moved to the East Rosebud, where she rode horseback to school in Roscoe. She enjoyed riding horses with her good friends Betty and Jean George. She also liked to go with her dad to Black Butte, where they kept their sheep over the summer. She graduated from Absarokee High School (cobblestone building) as valedictorian and then attended Concordia College, Eastern and Western Montana Colleges, receiving her teaching certification. She taught at Boyd, West Rosebud, Fishtail, Roscoe and Roy. At Roscoe, she taught her younger brother, Clifford, as well as several of her Ostrum cousins.
She met our father, James B. Jensen, when he started working for her dad. They were married on July 1, 1950, and had 45 happy years together. They started out on the East Rosebud, where their daughter now lives and later moved to Butcher Creek close to where Gladys was born. They worked together to build up their ranch and raised sheep and cattle and four children.
Gladys was well known for her wonderful meals, bread and pies. She easily put together meals for large groups like the shearing crews. She continued her Norwegian heritage by making lefse, egg cakes, Kumla, fruit soup and dravle.
She loved pine trees and created her own forest on Butcher Creek, where she had carried water to start all her little trees. She also had beautiful flowers and a large vegetable garden.
Gladys was very patient, kind and helpful in her quiet, subtle way. She liked being busy and active. She loved and enjoyed her grandchildren and often babysat them. Her great-grandchildren were a joy. Family picnics, Sunday drives, crossword puzzles, crocheting and reading were favorite activities. She read her Bible daily and was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Her faith was very important to her.
We will miss you terribly and you will always be remembered.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; a toddler brother, Stanley; and her husband James in 1995.
