1902 - 2003
Grace Marie (Graham) Phillips passed away at Aspen Meadows on Wednesday, April 30, 2003. She was born Sept. 10, 1902, in White Sulphur Springs, the eldest child of Joseph and Emily (Date) Graham. When she was six weeks old, she and her parents traveled by horse and buggy to the Fromberg area. Except for brief periods, she lived in or near Fromberg until she moved to Billings in 2001.
She graduated from Fromberg High School in 1921, and from Intermountain Union College (now Rocky Mountain College) in 1926. She taught at Stanford High School until her marriage to Charles L. Phillips on Jan. 11, 1930, in Helena. Mr. Phillips was an area beekeeper and farmer for many years. He died in 1979.
Mrs. Phillips was an active member and supporter of the Fromberg community until ill health prevented her participation. Her particular interest was in the Fromberg Methodist Church. The organizational meeting of the church was held in her parents' home in 1905. Over the next 97 years, she served the church faithfully in many ways.
She was preceded in death by her husband and by her two younger brothers, William and Stanley Graham. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Betty Phillips of Fromberg; and her daughter and son-in-law, Jo Ann and Ben Nielsen of Spokane, Wash. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Stanley Phillips of Seoul, South Korea, Christopher Nielsen of Seattle, James Nielsen of San Francisco, Doni Phillips of Ottawa, Ontario, and Valerie Robertson of Fromberg. Great-grandsons Sam Phillips, Donny Robertson, Thomas Nielsen; a great-granddaughter Dacey Robertson; two nieces and a nephew also survive.
