SPOKANE, Wash. - Helen passed peacefully into God's hands on Nov. 3, 2008, in Spokane. She was born Nov. 17, 1924, near Sheridan, Wyo., to Richileu and Mary Rowland. Helen's early years were spent on her family's farm, where she learned the value of hard work. She graduated from Hardin High School. On May 29, 1944, Helen married the love of her life, Harold Wedel. They lived in Custer, Laurel and Livingston, Mont., where they raised three children. Helen worked for many years for the Livingston Clinic and then at the Parkway Motel. She was a longtime member of Livingston Bible Church. In 2003, she moved to Spokane.
Helen was a creative, generous, loving woman whose faith was evident in the way she lived. Family was the center of her life. Her generosity was boundless; she often sacrificed her own material comforts for those who were most dear to her. She loved fishing and camping, working in her yard and garden and doing anything that would get her outside. Never one to sit idle for long, she knitted and crocheted many afghans and sweaters, made and sold hundreds of purses from recycled jeans, and always had some creative project going. Helen was well known for her delicious pies and visitors could count on a piece whenever they stopped by.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Cathy Kuntz and her husband, Philip, of Selah; her son Larry Wedel and his wife, Pat, of Hyattville, Wyo.; and her son, Steve Wedel and his wife, Kris, of Spokane; grandchildren, Nancy Tritthart of Germany, Ginny Billings of Shepherd, Mont., Gator Wedel and Michelle Yeager of Silesia, Mont., Jason Wedel, Shane Wedel and Josh Wedel of Spokane. She also has three great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Also surviving are brothers, Frank Rowland and wife, Nita, of Laurel, Richard Rowland and wife, Patricia, of Lame Deer, Ralph Rowland and wife, Norie, of Sheridan, Wyo., sisters; Betty Holmes of Spearfish, S.D., Shirley and husband, Bill Davis, of Cody, Wyo., Alice and husband, George Baker of Sheridan, and Evelyn Sturtz of Sheridan.
