Irene Carter was born Aug. 23, 1920, in Hampton, England. She married Harold Gjerde in 1945 and they lived in Grass Range and Lewistown, Mont., until their divorce in 1968. She lived in Santa Barbara, Calif., and Grants Pass, Ore., before moving to Billings in 2004.
Irene died in peace Wednesday, May 15, 2013. She is survived by her son James (Kip) Gjerde; grandsons Jeff, Ross and Blake; granddaughter Sona Westerlund; and numerous nieces and nephews, who called her Auntie Reenie.
A private celebration of Irene’s life will be held at a later date. Memorials can be sent to RiverStone Health Hospice Services or a charity of one’s choice.
Special thanks to the staff at the Hospice House for taking such great care of our mom/grandmother/great-grandmother, for getting to know all of us, and especially Irene, for taking care of her needs when she and we couldn’t, and for making her final weeks with us special. We appreciate your enthusiasm when her great-grandkids stopped by on their bikes after school for a quick kiss and always-fresh cookie, for the late-evening family gatherings, and for welcoming her “grand dogs” visits. Thanks for the room with a clear view of the playground and baseball fields where her great-grandchildren play and spend most of their evenings. And thanks to the deer, ducks and rabbits who stopped to say hello just outside her window.
Arrangements are by Cremation & Funeral Gallery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.cfgbillings.com through “Our Families.”
