Irma Jean Brekke, 83, of Billings, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2013, at Moorberg Cottage on the campus of St. John’s Lutheran Ministries. Irma was born on Dec. 9, 1929, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Jack and Irma (Krueger) Smallwood. She was raised and educated in Chicago and attended the University of Chicago for a time.
Good friends introduced Irma to James Brekke, also of Chicago, and their courtship developed into marriage on May 27, 1950. To this union, four children were born: Karl, Carolyn, Diane and Eve.
In 1967, James’s job with Burroughs Corporation brought the family to Billings, where they remained the rest of their lives. James passed away in 1988.
Irma was a true homemaker, caring for her husband and children. She enjoyed knitting and baking. Through her whole life, she loved to travel. She explored the world including Africa, Europe, South America, China, Japan and more! She enjoyed the cruise trips with other ladies her age and numerous friends.
In 2005, Irma moved into Mission Ridge, and enjoyed the opportunities to socialize with her friends there. She transitioned into the Cottages in 2010 and remained there until her passing.
Irma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim and her brother Verne.
She is survived by her children Karl (Mickie) Brekke of Billings, Carolyn (Gary) Ostlund of Huntley, Diane (Joe) Mayer of Florida, and Eve (Matt) Boerschinger of Billings; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. A reception will follow at the Elk’s Lodge.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Zoo Montana.
