CROW AGENCY — James Joseph Buffalo Sr., 67, of Crow Agency, passed away Sept. 11, 2012, in the St. Vincent Hospital.
Ba’lee Kulee “Keeps Money” was born Dec. 30, 1944, in Crow Agency, a son of Cecelia Buffalo and Joe He Does It. He was a descendant of Chief Sits in the Middle of the Land. His grandmother Sarah Buffalo raised him. He grew up in the St. Xavier area and attended the St. Xavier Mission School. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, hand-games and arrow-throwing events. He participated in local rodeos in the bareback event. In his spare time, he played bingo and loved spending time with his family and friends. He was especially proud of his grandsons; Indian Relay Team, which was named after his great uncle “White Buffalo;” and his granddaughters Angel and Jodi, who participated in the barrel racing events.
Joe married Olive Yarlott and was later divorced. He married Phyllis Well Known and was later divorced. He worked for area ranches and as a custodian for the Lodge Grass schools.
His parents; grandparents Johnny and Sara Knows Buffalo; uncles Raphael and Martin He Does It, Edward and Jim Buffalo; aunts Annie Walks, Stella Old Coyote and Juanita Crooked Arm; nephews Dennis, Virgil and Edward Buffalo Jr.; cousins Wesley, Aloysius and John Crooked Arm, Mary Crooked Arm, Juanita Blue Thunder, Alma DeCrane, Marceline Morrison, Charles and Floyd Walks preceded Joe in death.
Survivors include his sons, John, Elmer (Annie), Travis and Joe (Tia) Buffalo Jr.; his daughter, Ella (Shawn) Iron; his grandchildren whom he was especially close to: Joseph, Amber, Jodi, Angel, Trevon, Baby Joe, Devaney, Blue Eyes, OJ, Shawn and Porter; his sisters, Clara Big Lake, Brenda He Does It and Helen Old Coyote; his brothers, Alfred (Roberta) Walks and Vincent Crooked Arm; his nieces, Ethel (Chester) Bird Hat, Pearl (Larry) Tobacco, Sarah (Clyde) Redwoman, Cathy Walks, Vera (Myers) and Alfredean (Eddie) Brien; his nephews, Gary and John (Laverne) Buffalo; as well as his extended family including the Morrison, Williamson, Not Afraid, Yarlott, He Does It, Pretty on Top, Left Hand, Bird Hat, Moccasin, Alden, Falls Down, Backbone, Old Elk, Old Horn and Bird families. Our Family is grateful for the loving care provided by the Crow Nursing Home and St. Vincent ICU staff.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
