BOERNE, Texas — Lt. Col. (retired) James Dean Roy passed away on September 28, 2018, in Boerne, Texas. Jim was born to Darrel and Katherine Roy in Wolf Point and grew up on the family farm. He graduated from Wolf Point High School in 1979 as the class valedictorian.
After high school, Jim attended the Air Force Academy. He participated on the Wings of Blue Parachute Team and was repeatedly recognized with academic and military honors. Jim graduated as the #1 engineering student in the class of 1983. Out of pilot training, Jim was assigned to fly the F-16 Fighting Falcon at Torrejon, Air Base (TJ) outside of Madrid Spain. At TJ, Jim distinguished himself by becoming a first assignment instructor pilot. He married Lieutenant Marbel Castro in 1988 and they moved to England, where Jim flew with the prestigious 527th Aggressor Squadron, simulating enemy tactics.
Jim took a break from the Air Force to graduate with Top Honors while earning a Master’s Degree in Theology at Dallas Theological Seminary. He returned to the Air Force in 1998 and went on to serve a total of 20 years with assignments in New Mexico, Turkey, Pakistan, Virginia and Hawaii. Jim and Marbel returned to Texas in 2012 after they retired from the Air Force.
The highlight of Jim and Marbel’s life together was when Gracie and Christopher joined their family in 2004. Jim adored his children and was actively involved in their education and sports.
Jim loved his Lord Jesus, cherished his wife and adored their children. He was predeceased by his father Darrel Roy. Jim is survived by his wife Marbel; his children Christopher and Gracie; his mother Katherine Roy; brother Steve Roy; sisters Debbie Wermuth and Patty Presser.
Internment has taken place at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
