Jim Osman

3-12-1936 - 11-22-2008

Early in the morning Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, God gently lifted our dad into his loving arms and welcomed him home.

Dad was born March 12, 1936, to Pearl (Keller) and LeRoy Osman in Minot, N.D. He graduated from Minot High School in 1954, and attended Minot State University. He moved to Minneapolis to work for Mark Hurd Land Surveyors, where he began a long and successful career in photo-telemetry, mapmaking and surveying. He married Merry Jane Lubenow in Ceylon, Minn. In 1966, the family moved to Grand Forks, N.D., where Jim accepted a job with KB Mackichan Engineering. In 1971, Jim accepted a job with Christian, Spring, and Sielbach Engineering in Billings. When his parents met, his mother was a schoolteacher in Rapelje and his father was building the train tracks through downtown Billings. His grandparents homesteaded in Augusta. Dad had visited Montana often growing up, and always wanted to return.

Eventually, he formed his own company, Associated Land Surveyors. He was an Emeritus member of the American Society of Photogrammetry, maintaining contact with many friends and professionals in his field. He loved to fly, filming topography and turning it into the maps we enjoy today. Our dad was passionate about our genealogy and spent countless hours in research. He loved to go camping, hunting and fishing, and we are blessed to have many memories of being at Minnesota lakes and throughout Montana. He was involved in our activities, kept our junk-heap cars running, could fix anything. He taught us to drive, fix a flat and change the oil. Our dad believed family was sacred. In the early '70s, he and his family built a cabin in the Bull Mountains, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Dad was an internet/e-mail junkie, corresponding with friends and family daily.

He was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Billings and served as a Deacon. After battling alcoholism, dad enjoyed sobriety the last 20 years of his life. In 1990, he moved to Sacramento, Calif., where he was employed by American Aerial until he retired. In retirement, he did topo maps at his residence.

Jim is survived by son Timothy Osman; daughters Teresa Kennedy and fiancé Bill Baldi, Trina (Bill) White, all of Billings; son Thomas (Scarlette) Osman of Lincoln, Calif.; grandchildren Will and Jileasa White, Rebekah and Benjamin Kennedy, and Angela and Alexander Osman; brother Richard (Ila) Osman of Battle Lake, Minn.; sister Donna (Ron) Hensen of Glenburn, N.D.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families who loved him very much. Dad is also survived by former wife Merry Osman (Dr. Harlan Krein), and former son-in-law Mark Kennedy. He was preceded in Life Triumphant by his parents.

Condolences and memories may be sent to the family at 1340 Cloverleaf Place, Billings, MT 59106. A memorial service celebrating our dad's life will be held Saturday, June 13, 2009, 11 a.m., at Michelotti Sawyers Funeral Home, with reception to follow at 1340 Cloverleaf Place in Billings.
