DENVER, Colo. — John Hurly, M.D. passed away April 14, 2011, in Denver. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth.
John was born Jan. 28, 1918, in Glasgow, Mont., to Judge John and Jeanette Hurly. He was raised in Glasgow and graduated from Glasgow High School in 1935. He attended Montana State University in Bozeman. After three years of undergraduate studies, John was accepted into Medical School at the University of Minnesota, where he graduated in 1942. He married Ruth Wedum, also of Glasgow, in October 1942.
After their marriage, John and Ruth moved to Denver, where John completed his internship at Colorado General Hospital. In June 1943, he joined the Navy and was assigned to the Naval Air Station at Alameda, Calif. From there he was deployed and served as the medical officer aboard the Naval Ship USS Adhara. He travelled throughout the South Pacific, including stops in Australia, New Zealand and many small Pacific Islands.
Following John‘s discharge from the Navy in 1946, he and Ruth lived in Minneapolis for three years. John completed his medical residency, specializing in internal medicine at the Minneapolis VA Hospital. In 1950 John and Ruth settled in Billings, Mont., where John established a medical practice and co-founded Internal Medical Associates. He retired from medical practice in 1984.
In retirement, Ruth and John continued to live in Billings. They traveled to Maui for the winter months and spent summers at their lakeside cabin on Whitefish Lake.
John's care with his patients and his excellence as a physician was exceeded only by his generosity and devotion to his family. John was an avid clock collector and member of the National Association of Clock and Watch Collectors. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
John and Ruth had five children. Daughter Barbara Jo O'Rourke preceded John in death in 1995. He is survived by his daughters, Janet (Brian) White of Denver, Carol Hurly of Salmon, Idaho, June (Robert) Davids of Kailua, Oahu; his son, Tom Hurly of Billings; and his son-in-law, Barbara's husband, Tim (Terri) O'Rourke of Las Vegas, Nev. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and two great-grandsons. Also surviving him are his sister Jean White of Helena, Mont.; his brother Robert Hurly of Glasgow, Mont.; and his sister Mary Jo Fox of Kalispell, Mont.
John was a gracious man, concerned about others, always a gentleman. John was loved by family and friends; he will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation, 1106 N. 30th, Billings, Montana 59101.
A family service will be held this summer at Whitefish Lake. Arrangements are pending.
