Julie Lynne Southern, née Monson, was born in a sandstorm in Odessa, Texas, on March 20, 1959 to Joy Lorraine (Kober) Monson and Sherwood Monson, only to move to Cut Bank by her first birthday. She enjoyed running the cash register at the family pharmacy and was an eager student, affectionately known as Julie Monson Bunsen Bun Burner. She was also a first-rate piano student, a prodigy who started to play at age 3. Most of her happy childhood stories included her cousins, Pam, Bobby and Ted. Graduating as valedictorian with a scholarship to Montana Eastern (now MSU Billings), she moved and pursued a degree in music education after deciding deciphering Chaucer was not worth an English degree. While working on her junior year, she went on a blind date with a man attending Montana Tech—David Southern—and after a long distance courtship, they married shortly after graduation in 1982 before moving to Wright, Wyoming (you see, she was very much in love). Two daughters entered the scene, and the family moved around, meeting lots of people, making many friends around the country—even more so as the Internet became a household thing. It opened the door for Julie to connect with music lovers and book lovers all around the world. Always a curious learner, she started into the digital scrapbooking world and found a creative outlet that skipped over a glue and glitter mess, forming deep bonds and encouraging others in their faith. The only relative better at her in Candy Crush is her cousin Julia. In June 2018, she was diagnosed with cancer, and despite a strong fight—by Julie and David together—she said goodbye on her sixtieth birthday, rejoining her parents at Jesus’s side. David still has his two daughters who continue to gray his hair, though: Kati Beth and Molly Joy, and his pack expanded to include Molly’s husband Josh and soon-to-be grandson, who has the Kober big toe, just like his grandma Julie’s. Services will be held on Monday, March 25th at 11 a.m. MST, at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th Street West, Billings, MT 59102.
