Leland Joy Wells, age 94, passed peacefully in his home surrounded by loving family on Feb. 15, 2017. He was born Aug. 4, 1922, to George F. and Malicent Clegg Wells. Leland grew up on the family farm in Vineyard, Utah among a large family of cousins, whom he dearly loved. Leland attended schools in Vineyard and Orem, graduating from Lincoln High School where he excelled in music, football, basketball and track.
Leland married Mary Lorraine Wadley on March 27, 1943. They were married 73 years and 11 months. To this union were born seven children: Edith Ann Oliver(Rodney) Herriman, Utah; Sharren Anderson (Bryant) Sandy, Utah; Lynette Gurr (Cecil—deceased) South Jordan, Utah; Laurel Pugmire (Mark) Gilbert, Arizona; Mary Lee Bullock (Carl) Firestone, Colorado; George L. Wells (Julie) Billings, Montana; Daniel W. Wells (Julane) Billings Montana.
Leland moved his family to Billings in 1964, where he worked in construction and land development. Leland’s focuses in life were following the Savior and supporting and strengthening his family. Leland loved and served the Savior as a faithful member of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in many capacities including Bishop and Patriarch. Following the Savior’s admonition, Leland loved people and like Will Rogers, “never met a man he didn’t like.”
Leland supervised the building of homes with the Crow Indian people and made many friends. He loved to raise his garden with his friend, Han Lee. Together they grew and shared abundant flowers and vegetables with family and friends—one of Leland’s favorite services to provide others later in his life. Leland lived a long and full life, full of love and service to those around him.
Leland was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters. Leland is survived by one brother, William Wells (Colene) of Farmington, New Mexico; his wife Lorraine, of the family home in Billings; his children and their spouses; 37 grandchildren; 115 great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the many neighbors, friends, and members of the Hospice team for their kind and gentle service to Leland and his family.
