LODGE GRASS — Marilyn Black Eagle was born on Oct. 8, 1957, at Crow Agency, to Hartford Jr. “Sonny” and Mary Black Eagle. Hartford Sr. and Ruth Morning Black Eagle raised her. She was given her Crow name, “Iichii’le ikaa’laakoo,” which means “Goes to check on horses,” by Joe Rock Above. She was a member of the Whistling Water clan and a child of the Newly Made Lodge. She was also a member of the Night Hawk Society and a member of the Pentecostal church of God. Marilyn was a lifelong resident of Lodge Grass, Mont. She attended school at Lodge Grass Public schools and attended school at Pierre Indian School in South Dakota. She earned her General Education Diploma and went on to earn her Associate of Arts in Business Administration from LBHC. Marilyn joined the workforce when she was 18 years old; she worked in a variety of clerical positions and most recently was employed by the Crow Tribe as an office assistant for the Business Ventures program. Marilyn had three best friends that she cherished, Cheryl Jefferson, Pansy Yellowmule and Virjama Plain Bull.

Marilyn lost her life on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, in a two-vehicle collision south of Garryowen on Interstate 90’s frontage road at 4:45 p.m.

Marilyn was preceded in death by Myers Black Eagle, Cedric Walks Over Ice, Carson Walks Over Ice, Sandy Walks Over Ice, Myron Little Light, Charlene Black Eagle, Art Fitzpatrick, Teresa Gun Shows, Cleveland Bellrock and Jarrod Black Eagle.

Survivors include her parents, Mary and Hartford “Sonny” Black Eagle; three children, Misty Dawn (Tom) Nagel, Wendy (Ernie) Crazy Boy and her only son, Shann Wade Nomee. Marilyn also had four grandchildren she was very proud of, three granddaughters, Shanna, Nia and Trinity Nagel, that she called her joy, and a grandson, Evan Crazy Boy, that she called her pride.

Marilyn was a compassionate, loving, caring and disciplined mother and grandmother. Marilyn was the fourth of eight children which include her sisters, Mary Ruth (Danny) Plainfeather, Kathleen (Que) Three Irons and Tina Black Eagle; her brothers, Cedric, Crow Tribal Chairman (1st Lady, Audrey), Hart (Dinah), LaGrant (Bertha), Bradford (Billie Kay) and Ronnie (Virjama) Flatmouth; nieces, Chrislyn, Shonna, Garilynn, Maranda, Tasha, Baby Rose and Elizabeth; nephews, Jr., Ryland, Jr. Bird, Gareth, Travis, Randall, Dylan, Aubrey, Levi, Brant, Larele, Wacey, Baby Ron and Dominic; adopted sisters, Faith Benally, Ada Bends and Donna Bends; adopted brothers, President Barack Obama (1st Lady Michelle), Navajo brothers, Stephen, Tim, Ambrose, Ronald, Samuel, Sandy and Luke Benally. Her grandmothers, Catherine Little Light, Iola Medicine Horse and Bessie Wagon; her aunts, Regina Goes Ahead, Delma Jean Yarlott, Mary (Gale) Three Irons and Loren Spint; her uncles, Bill Stewart, Larry Tobacco, Dana Tobacco, Francis Bear Claw, Chief Medicine Horse, Curtis Medicine Horse, Larry Little Owl, Joe and Robert Pickett and Newton Old Crow. Family relatives include: Black Eagle, Benally, Bear Claw, Medicine Horse, Walks Over Ice, Fitzpatrick, Leider, Iron, Morning, House, Brown, Sees the Ground, Stewart and the Calvin Jefferson Sr. family. If we have forgotten anyone, we apologize.

Funeral services to honor Marilyn’s life will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Multi-Purpose Building in Crow Agency. Interment will follow in the Lodge Grass Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
