HELENA — Mayme E. Strom, 93, of Helena, passed away Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at St. Peter’s Hospital, due to a brief illness.
She was born on Oct. 19, 1916, in the family home south of Wolf Point at Sand Creek, in McCone County to Torvald and Mina Rose Birkland.
Mayme was the third of 10 children. She grew up in Wolf Point and graduated from Wolf Point High School.
On Dec. 23, 1937, in Sidney, she married the love of her life, Arley Strom.
Arley enlisted in the Army and went to Canada, where Mayme followed and worked as a secretary for Army Intelligence.
In 1945, they returned to the Wolf Point area, where they both worked for Rathert-Schreiber Motors.
In August of 1950, they started the Ford dealership in Poplar, which they operated until 1962. After they sold the business, they moved to Helena, where they made their home and founded the vending company, Golden West Enterprises.
She was an active partner until their retirement in 1979.
Mayme’s career as a secretary was very important to her and told everyone she “sat behind a desk all her life.” She shared many fond memories of working up north during the war and enjoyed her job working in Governor Babcock’s office.
After their retirement, they enjoyed traveling in their RV to Washington, California and Arizona. She also made several trips to visit her father and family in Norway.
After Arley’s passing in 1990, she enjoyed visiting the local schools, where she assisted children with their reading.
She loved to shop and enjoyed her trips to Seattle with Joan to visit her great-niece Kim.
Mayme will always be remembered for her kind heart, her beauty, sense of fashion and for being a true lady.
In the past two and a half years, she lived at Rosetta Assisted Living, where she received great care.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arley; brothers, Leif, Odin and Robert Birkland, sisters: Martha Budke, Eva Johnson, Lorraine Sherlock and Helen Rusche.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at Retz Funeral Chapel in Helena, with Pastor Charles Amdahl officiating. Burial will be in the Montana State Veteran Cemetery, Fort Harrison.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are made to a charity of their choice.
