ABSAROKEE - Michael Gary Butler "Mick" was born July 13, 1940, in Billings. He was the son of Les and Hazel (Carney) Butler. He received his early education at the Garfield School and graduated from Billings Senior High in 1958. Mick graduated from Eastern Montana College in 1966 with a bachelor of science degree in education. He taught high school science in Park City for two years and the remainder of his career was spent teaching math and science in Hardin. He married Eva Smith Graves in 1994. After Eva finished her teaching career, she and Mick moved to the Stillwater River near Absarokee. Mick enjoyed many hours, days and years fishing the Stillwater and catchin' the Big One!
Mick never forgot the many South Side friends he grew up with in Billings, and has always had a soft spot in his heart for his poker buddies in Hardin.
He was preceded in death by his mom and dad, and is survived by his wife, Eva; his daughters, Kathy (Ron) Johnson of Hardin and Pam (Alan) Kuntz of Billings; his brother, Pat (Lois) Butler of Absarokee; stepdaughter Julie (Glenn) Cox of Beaverton, Ore.; and stepson Scott (Jennifer) Graves of Boise, Idaho. Mick had nine grandchildren, Stephanie (Jeremy), Sara, Trevor, Lacey, Laura, Allyson, Brandon, Madison and Owen; and three great-grandchildren, Malachi, Aunaka and Jori.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Mick's life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m., at Smith Downtown Chapel, 925 S. 27th St. A reception will follow at the Holiday Inn Grand Montana Hotel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Big Horn County Historical Society.
