Mildred Rosemary Sonsteng Knight, 82, passed away at St. John's Nursing Home in Billings on Monday, Feb. 19, 2007.
She was born on Dec. 28, 1924, the daughter of Arnold and Laura (Saubak) Sonsteng. She was raised on a farm north of Frazer in the Lustre community. Millie had 10 brothers and four sisters. The happiest times at home often centered around music.
In 1943, Millie graduated from Frazer High School. During World War II, Mildred worked for Boeing as a file clerk. She spent two years in Seattle before returning to Glasgow. Back in Glasgow, Millie went to work for the Glasgow Livestock Company. While working with cattlemen, cowboys, and farmers, she met a printer, Ivy Leonard Knight. They were married on June 2, 1949. They raised four daughters: Laura (Hal) Haefer, a retired elementary librarian living in Billings; Julie (Charles) Swanson, an apple farmer's wife living in the Bitterroot Valley near Corvallis; Sharleen Knight, a billing clerk in Glasgow; and Doris (Rick) Leader, a certified public accountant in Glasgow. Millie's daughters were very fortunate to be raised during a time when a mother did not work outside the home. There were always cookies in the jar, good home-cooked meals and a mother who was always there! Millie spent many hours scrubbing floors and windows, starching and ironing clothes, and stitching homemade dresses for her daughters in the family home in Glasgow.
In the '60s, Mildred and Ivy went into partnership with Cy Helland in the job printing business under the name Courier Printing.
In 1977, Millie became an employee of the Valley County Clerk and Recorder's Office. She retired in the early '90s. She has been an active member of First Lutheran Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Her daughters and their families survive Millie. She has seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Millie is also survived by her sister, Arlene (George) Decker of Santa Fe, N.M.; her sister, Helen Hagen of Moorhead, Minn.; her brothers, Kenneth (Carole) and Stanley of Glasgow, and Douglas (Patricia) of Wolf Point; as well as her brothers-in-law Larry, John (Marge), Richard (Norma) and Carl (Joanne) Knight; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her husband preceded Mildred in death in 2004. Millie's parents and seven brothers and two sisters also preceded her in death.
Services will be held at First Lutheran Church of Glasgow, on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. Bell Mortuary of Glasgow is in charge of arrangements.
