EKALAKA - Rankin Dean, 84, of Ekalaka, passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at the Dahl Memorial Healthcare in Ekalaka.
He was born on Oct. 22, 1917, in Ekalaka, the son of George and Alma (Larson) Dean. Rankin grew up and attended school in Ekalaka. Shortly thereafter, he joined the CCC and did two sessions with them over the course of a few years.
On Aug. 26, 1939, Rankin married Helen Stitser in Baker. They ranched for several years outside of Ekalaka before moving to town and making their home there. Rankin learned the carpentry and masonry trades and worked at those vocations for most of his adult life. One in which he enjoyed the most was his construction of the petrified rock formations at the Carter County Museum.
After retirement, Rankin continued to stay busy with odd jobs and different projects. His many interests included fishing, hunting, and doing things for his children and grandchildren. Those who knew Rankin well will always remember his good-natured, humorous and generous personality.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Francis Freese; and a sister, Olive Markuson. Rankin is survived by his loving spouse of over 63 years, Helen; a son, Tim (Mary) of Bozeman; two daughters, Janette (David) Rutledge of Billings and Norma Cridland of Ekalaka; a brother, Leslie (Nelle) Dean of Ekalaka; a sister-in-law, Patricia Freese of Bozeman; a brother-in-law, Magnus Markuson of Ekalaka; six grandchildren, Samone, Darci, Jill, Michelle, Traci and Darin; 10 great-grandchildren; and many much loved.
A rosary service will be held on Thursday, May 2, at 7 p.m. at the Stevenson Funeral Home in Ekalaka. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, May 3, at 10 a.m. at the St. Joan of Arc Church in Ekalaka. Burial will follow at the Dean Family Lot in Beaverlodge Cemetery.
