Roberta Denler Sullivan, a former Yellowstone County Superintendent of Schools, passed away on Sept. 8, 2012. She was born Roberta Jeanette Pond on Oct. 20, 1914, in Tagus, N.D., and was fondly called Bobbe or Berta. She was the daughter of Loretta Elitha Buckland and Ralph Humphrey Pond.
Bobbe grew up in Whitefish. She graduated from Whitefish High School and went on to MSU in Bozeman where she graduated with a degree in education in 1938. She was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority.
While in Bozeman, Bobbe met her future husband, Herb Denler. They were married on April 8, 1943, in El Paso, Texas, where Herb was stationed in the Army. They had one son, Doug. Herb passed away on May 5, 1968.
On June 27, 1977, Bobbe married John Justin Sullivan in Shawnee Mission, Kan. Bobbe and John enjoyed traveling and getting together with friends. John passed away on Jan. 24, 1997.
Bobbe participated in many civic and community organizations. She was a member of Zonta, Landmarks, AAUW, DAR, Colonial Dames, PEO, Zoo Montana, S.A.I.N.T.S., Republican Women, and Montana Association of County Superintendents. She also volunteered as a Pink Lady at St. Vincent's Hospital for many years. Bobbe was an active member of St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral. She was awarded the 1989 "Salute to Women" by the YWCA. In addition to her work in many organizations, she loved to play the organ, was an avid reader, a crossword puzzle fan and a bridge player.
Bobbe is survived by one son, Doug (Connie) Denler of Clancy; two grandchildren, Todd (Tracy) Denler of Clancy, and Kellie (Brock) Boedecker of Sheridan, Wyo. She also had four great-grandchildren, Braden and Kayley Denler and Drew and Mei Boedecker. In addition she is survived by her brother Col. (Ret.) Burritt Hollister “Holly” Pond and his wife, Doris. She is also survived by five nieces and one nephew.
Bobbe was preceded in death by husbands Herb Denler and John Sullivan; parents, Loretta and Ralph Pond; sister Olive Genevra “Honey” Gaffney; and brother-in-law Col. (Ret.) John “Bud” Gaffney.
Viewing will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Dahl Chapel with friends invited to a family visitation and reception from 6 to 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at noon on Thursday at St. Patrick’s Co-Cathedral with burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
