MILES CITY - Ruth Clara Marie Nansel passed away peacefully with family members at her side at Holy Rosary Heathcare Center in Miles City on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, at the age of 82.
Ruth was born on Jan. 15, 1926, to Carl F. Anderson and Ester Bengtsson Johanson Anderson. She attended school in Miles City and graduated from Custer County High School in 1943. During her high school years, she participated in many sporting activities especially women's basketball and tennis. She was musically talented and played several musical instruments, but enjoyed playing the drums the most. Ruth continued her education by attending some of the first college courses to be offered at Miles Community College. She transferred to the University of Montana in Missoula where she earned a Bachelors of Art Degree in Business Marketing in 1947. During her college activities, she was a drummer for the Marching Band. After graduation, Ruth was employed by 1st National Bank in Miles City. She married Dr. Arlo Nansel in 1948 and enjoyed 60 years of blessed marriage. They raised five children and seldom missed any of their numerous and varied activities from musical performances, to sporting events, to plays, and all activities in which their children were involved. Ruth loved spending time with her family, her children were her life.
Ruth was a member of the First Lutheran Church. She enjoyed bowling, riding horses and had a love for all animals. She also was a member of Sage Riders, AAUW and was a Girl Scout and Brownie Leader.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Arlo Nansel of Miles City; son, Ron (Melody) Nansel of Miles City; daughters, Darla (Jim) Orestad of Bozeman, Debi (Jerry) Schaefer of Pittsburg, Pa., Denise Nansel of Pocatello, Idaho, and Deena (Pat) Power of Phoenix; brother, Carl R. Anderson of Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii; 11 grandchildren, Damon Orestad, Alex (Cardell) Orestad, Brett (Sarah) Nansel, Brian (Irma) Nansel, Ashley Schaefer, Jessica Schaefer, James Schaefer, Michael Schaefer, Reece Power, Nolan Power and Lexi Power; and four great-grandchildren, Patrick Orestad, Tyler Nansel, Ryan Nansel and Kate Nansel.
Friends will be received by the Nansel Family from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home, Tuesday, Nov. 18. Private family graveside interment will be held at 3 p.m. in the Custer County Cemetery in Miles City.
