Take your rest, Mother Davis, take your rest! Our very hard-working mother/wife passed into the arms of our Lord on March 30, 2011, surrounded by her family. Steffie lived for the past six months at Billings Rehab, after a fall at her Billings home.
Stephanie Frances Chizook, 91, was born Nov. 8, 1919, in Chelsea, Mass., the youngest of five children born to Paul and Euphemia (Rudnick) Chizook. She was but 4 years old when her mother died suddenly. She clung to her beloved father, but tragically he died less than two years later. Never adopted, she was raised in a series of foster homes, while enduring the separation from her four siblings.
Her luck changed when she met a Montanan, a USN chief petty officer stationed in the area while serving aboard the USS Mayrant. Steffie married James R. Davis in Boston on Oct. 11, 1941. Her husband often refers to that lucky date, as for the next 70 years, his life would be graced by her remarkable fortitude, considerate ways and absolute loyalty and devotion.
The following year, their first child, James R. Davis, Jr. was born in New York City. Near the end of World War II, the family moved across the country to Warren, Mont., where Steffie met her many in-laws who greatly enjoyed teaching the fun-loving "city girl" how to drive a car.
Settling in Bridger, the couple began their own business, Davis Electric, and raised five children. Steffie was active in the St. Theresa altar society of the Sacred Heart Church. Her cream puffs were so renowned, they would completely "sell out" at bake sales before they were ever made!
After 30 years in Bridger, the couple retired in Billings in 1976, where they lived on Brentwood Lane for the past 35 years.
Steffie was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy J. Davis; her grandson, Thomas K. Davis; her brothers, Vasily and Steve Chizook of Boston, Morris Chizook of Michigan; sister Irene Zlotkowski of Ohio. She is survived by her beloved husband, James R. Davis, Sr.; sons James R. (Clo) Davis, Jr. of Palm Springs, Calif., William R. (Traci) Davis of Kasilof, Alaska; daughters Melody Davis (Gary Hoffman) of Anchorage, Alaska, and Stephanie Davis of Reed Point; seven grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at Rosebud Cemetery in Absarokee amidst a spring snowstorm on April 3. Condolences may be sent to James R. Davis, Sr., St. John's Chapel Court #103, 3940 Rimrock Road, Billings, MT 59102. The family wishes to deeply thank Dr. Hagan for decades of devoted service and the entire staff of Billings Rehab for their many kindnesses.
