Born Dec. 8, 1952 in Harlowton, to Shirley Mae and Jack Gerald Smart, Steve was raised on the Musselshell river. He loved to fish from a young age. His family moved to Shepard when he was 10 and graduated from Billings Senior High in 1971. He served 6 years in the Marine Corp Reserve. He married Barbra Hilliard and they divorced shortly thereafter.
August 1976, he married his soul-mate Debbie Wittman enjoying 42 years of marriage. In 1977, Steve made his most important decision; choosing to use his life to serve the Lord. In August 1985, he moved his family to Cheyenne, WY where Steve attended Cheyenne Aerotech. Always looking for an adventure; the following year he moved his family across the country to Lynchburg, VA later settling in Nashville, TN for the next 10 years. They raised their 4 children Travis (44), Jesse (40), Faith (37), and Rachel (35).
Feeling the draw of Montana rivers and family he returned to Montana in 1998 where he spent the next year sharing wonderful times with his parents before his father’s passing in 1999. He spent 30 years as an aircraft mechanic, retiring in 2015 from Edwards Jet Center. Steve and Debbie settled in Roberts, MT in 1999 and remained there until his passing on Friday, Sept. 14, in Billings.
He is preceded in his death by his parents Jack and Shirley Smart and his infant son Clifton Carl. He is survived by his wife Debbie, sons Travis (fiancé Tina), Jesse (Tiffany), daughters Faith (Ryan Krull) grandsons Wyatt, Weston, & William and Rachel (Brandon Schillinger), and grandchildren Tayleigh, Brayden and Jaxon; Brothers, John and Rick, Sisters Linda Wittman and Virginia Heart along with nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and his much loved extended Christian family.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Billings Church of Christ, 10th St. W and Alderson Ave.
