BUSBY — Virgil G. Schmidt, 73, passed away at his home Sept. 8, 2012.
He was born July 5, 1939, in Gackle, N.D., a son of Edward and Nimi Schmidt. As a young boy, he remembered moving to Montana with family and making their home in Hardin. Virgil attended school in Hardin and later joined the Army, serving three years, of which two years were in Germany. He loved the outdoors. Before his failing health, he especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also loved history and his favorite TV channels were Discovery, National Geographic and any other channel that had anything to do with history. He was a great storyteller and his family enjoyed his many stories of his life’s adventures, especially the stories he told about growing up on the family farm in North Dakota.
His parents, sisters Marvel Maier and Myrtle McNary, and brothers Morris, Jim and Al preceded Virgil in death.
His is survived by his wife, Wilhelmina; daughter Rochelle (Dale) Green; son Vaughn Schmidt; his grandchildren, Tasha (TJ) Anthony, Wyatt Green, Adam Schmidt and great-grandsons, Tyrell and Kyler; his brothers Neil (Sally) and Roy Schmidt; and his sisters Verlene Feller and Delphine Kruger.
Family and friends will meet at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Bullis Funeral Chapel and proceed to the Hardin Fairview Cemetery for a 1 p.m. graveside service with military honors. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
