Virginia "Ginny," age 86, passed away Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at her residence in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Ginny had struggled with pulmonary fibrosis the past few years.
Ginny was born on Dec. 16, 1925, in Sheridan, Wyo., the second daughter of Anne and Arthur Schaal. The family moved to Billings in 1936 and Ginny attended Fratt and graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1943. Ginny joined the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps and was capped in Helena at St. James Hospital. After WWII ended, Ginny attended U of M and joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
In 1947, Ginny married Carl C. Payne, and they resided in Billings and Great Falls. Ginny was a member of the Junior League, St. Peter & Paul's Parish, as well as many other organizations in Great Falls. The family returned to Billings in 1972, and Ginny worked part time for School District 2, the Arthritis Foundation, and was member of St. Thomas Parish.
Ginny loved to play bridge and travel. When Ginny's health began to fail, she moved to San Luis Obispo to be near her three children and other family.
Ginny was preceded in death by her parents, Art and Ann Schaal of Billings; brother, Dick Schaal of Everett, Wash.; sister, Jacquelyn Schaal of Billings; her spouse for 45 years, Carl C. Payne; and her daughter-in-law, Loree L. Payne of Billings.
Virginia is survived by her three children, Bayard Payne, Ruanne Payne O'Donoghue (Dan) and RadLee Payne of California; grandson, Chad Payne (Kelsey) of Wyoming; and granddaughter, Daniela of California; plus several nieces and nephews in California.
Reis Mortuary in San Luis Obispo and Cremation and Funeral Gallery in Billings are in charge of arrangements.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at Cremation and Funeral Gallery. Inurnment will follow at Mountview Cemetery, where she will be placed beside Carl Payne.
Ginny will be dearly missed by her family and friends as she was a very sweet and wonderful person.
