SPOKANE, Wash. - Walter L. Fatur, age 87, was born Oct. 11, 1921, in Bear Creek, Mont., to Matt and Antonia Fatur. Walt attended Bear Creek High School, where he played on the basketball team, winning the 1939 state championship. Walt married Dolores Keck of Laurel, Mont., and had a son, Jim. After military service in World War II, he returned to Laurel and attended business school in Billings. He then moved to Spokane with his wife and son, where he attended Kinman Business University.
Walt joined Burgan's Furniture in 1947 as office and credit manager. He was 1967 President of the Spokane Retail Credit Association, 1971 Director of the International Consumer Credit Association and the Washington State Consumer Credit Association. He was active in The Spokane Club, Exchange Club and Elks. He retired in 1984 as Vice President and general manager of Burgan's Furniture. Walt and his wife Jeanette moved to St. Maries, Idaho, after retirement for several years, then returned to Spokane in 1991.
He is survived by his son, Bill Fatur of Spokane; daughter Marie Mitchell of Queen Creek, Ariz.; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother John Lukich of Spokane. He is preceded in death by daughter Diane, son Jim, brothers Tommy, Bill, Ed Fatur and sister Christie Porter.
Walt died in Spokane, Jan. 11, 2009, and will be missed by all his friends and family.
