Romantic duo blows through town
"Gone With the Wind," starring Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable, had been showing at the theaters when word reached Custer (S.D.) High that everybody's heartthrob was in town.
Since it was early before classes had begun that fall morning, several students ran for a few blocks from the high school downtown to the Black Hills Café.
It was not a rumor! Clark Gable and Carole Lombard were having breakfast in Custer. He had been hunting pheasants around Watertown. Then they had stayed at the Alex Johnson Hotel in Rapid City and driven a new Ford the 48 miles to our small town.
Clark was very friendly and visited with us for a while, but Carol was rather aloof. As they drove away on main street, he cautioned us to stand back a safe distance.
Meeting the star "in the flesh" made a thrilling lasting memory for this high-school girl - a "bright spot" during the all-consuming and life-changing World War II years.
