A ride into the line of fire
In 1969, Paramount Studios filmed parts of the movie "Little Big Man" in the Billings area.
This included scenes filmed on the Earl Rosell ranch and at Medicine Tail Coulee near the actual battle site.
I rode in that movie as an extra. My riding partner was John Silverheels, nephew of Jay Silverheels who played Tonto in the "Lone Ranger" TV series.
Dustin Hoffman asked the two of us to go riding with him during a break in the filming. We weren't away from the location area too long and had an enjoyable time. Hoffman was easy to talk to.
On our return to the location area, the director of the film, Arthur Penn, was hopping mad, literally. He was worried about where Dustin was and was concerned we might have endangered his star.
As Penn talked to us, Dustin left going to his trailer. John and I were not fired but were warned not to do something like that again.
All in all, an interesting summer.
