Stacy Anderson cherishes "The Beast"
Stacy Anderson, who lives south of Laurel, won first prize in the Clunkers contest with her tale of "The Beast," the 1966 Chevrolet truck bought new by her great-great-uncle.

Some vehicles fit for the scrap heap met their end under the federal government’s Cash for Clunkers program. But some owners are far too attached to their old beaters to willingly part with them.

For some, their attachment is rooted in frugality. For others, it seems more sentimental.

In many cases, those clunkers have been nursed back from oblivion, coddled and cared for far beyond their expected useful life span.

Nearly 50 readers wrote in to tell us about the clunkers we kept. Stacy Anderson of Laurel won the contest’s first prize and $50 for her effort, while Melissa Gerving and Jewell Zweegman, both of Billings, won $25 each.
