Dear Joyce: Here’s an oldie (1980s) from your column you probably don’t remember.
Velveeta cheese fudge
1 pound margarine or butter
1 pound Velveeta cheese
4 pounds powdered sugar
1 cup cocoa
1 tbsp. vanilla
Chopped nuts, if desired
In a saucepan, melt margarine and cheese. Sift together sugar and cocoa, then add margarine and cheese mixture and then vanilla and nuts.
Mix well and spread evenly in a greased 9-inch by 13-inch pan. Cool and cut into pieces.
This was sent in by Emilee of Billings who said she cut the recipe in half. The recipe never failed Emilee and it didn’t fail me. Sarah, a Billings fan.
Dear Sarah: I noticed from the clipping you sent me that I thought the fudge was rich and different. Think I will agree with myself and then thank you for writing.
Dear Joyce: Thank you so much for the years of dedication to your readers. “Ask Joyce” is so much more than recipes. My grandmother, Hazel Ehli, read your column and clipped the recipes for many years. When I visited her, she had stacks of recipes to share. She always commented on the different variations. Some were new to her and some were longtime family favorites she had made for years.
Gramma passed away in 2006, and your column has been a precious link to one of the most important people in my life. Each time I see your picture I am back at Gramma’s dinner table pouring over recipes. I can’t think of one recipe that stood out more than others; it was your way of answering questions and sharing with others that Gramma appreciated. As I type I have to stop and wipe away the tears. I will miss your warm smile and thoughtful advice. You truly are “a friend of the family.” Amy H., Colstrip.
Dear Amy: What a lovely, thoughtful letter. Thank you. I am sure your grandmother could have cooked me under the table any day of the week, but we would have laughed about it.
Hi Joyce: You have really earned retirement, but I will miss your column. It was always fun to read, and I did try numerous recipes. Thanks for your faithfulness over the years. Jody Mercer Wallace, Billings.
Dear Jody: It was good to hear from you and thank you so much for the kind words.
