Intro There are two effective ways to rid your hands of flu viruses, bacteria, germs and other microbes. Here's a look at your options. HO Hand washing 101 Lather hands well with soap under warm running water. HO Rub hands together Rub hands together vigorously for 20 seconds; scrub back of hands, wrists, fingers, under nails; rinse well. HO Dry hands Dry hands with clean towel; use towel to turn off faucet and grab doorknob on exiting to avoid recontamination. HO Non-soap sanitization Use when soap and water are not available; must be at least 60 percent alcohol to be effective. HO Half a teaspoon Use at least a half-teaspoon to coat both hands. HO Rub hands Rub hands vigorously at least 30 seconds; if sanitizer dries before then, use more and repeat. HO Dirty hands Non-soap sanitization is not effective if hands are visibly dirty; use soap and water first.
