Reading challenge for kids under way

Ages 2-12 can participate in the Children's Reading Challenge at Parmly Billings Library.

Kids can pick up special bookmarks, then check out five books from the library to read and record on the bookmark and earn a reading prize. The last day to pick up bookmarks is Sunday, Nov. 23.

Bookmarks are available at the library, 510 N. Broadway, and on the Web at billings.lib.mt.us. Completed bookmarks must be returned to the library by Dec. 6

Children who return completed bookmarks also may register for a drawing for special prizes.

The library also has children's holiday craft projects planned from 4 to 5 p.m. Fridays on the third floor. The projects require registration at 657-8258. Activities are a tissue-paper mitten on Dec. 5, a stocking/mitten craft on Dec. 12 and tissue-paper candle lanterns on Dec. 19.

Montanans work on children's book

A new children's Christmas book, "A Carol For Gabriel," has been published with involvement by several Montanans.

Violet May Fadeff, an octogenarian from Snohomish, Wash., wrote and illustrated the book with help from her niece, Julie Peterson, of Shelby. The 48-page book with full-color illustrations tells about a North Pole adventure by a reindeer named Gabriel whose silver hooves draw Santa's attention.

The book's origins trace to Alaska in the 1960s when Fadeff spent chill winter nights dreaming up the story of the reindeer. Peterson helped develop the musical story line for the book, which includes three songs written just for the story and set to music and arranged by Leona Larson of Shelby.

Shirley Leck, of Galata, did coloration for the book, and Arthur Adamson edited the musical arrangements, while Debra Steinbacher helped with editing.

The book was released by Stoneydale Press Publishing Co., of Stevensville; 406-777-2729.
