The creation of the Bailey Reservoir fishing access site, 25 miles west of Havre, will be celebrated Saturday as a way to recognize and thank the Bailey family and the partners involved that secured access to the Hi-Line reservoir.
In September of last year, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks acquired a portion of the privately owned Bailey Reservoir in order to develop a public access site. The Bailey family has allowed the public to fish the reservoir since it was created by Howard Bailey in the early 1970s.
In order to acquire the site, FWP purchased 102 acres and also received an additional five acres that was purchased by the Great Falls Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited. The group obtained the money for the purchase from Great Falls businessman Jim Filipowicz. The Filipowicz family have been longtime visitors to the reservoir.
This summer, FWP plans to make improvements to the site, including upgrading the entrance road, parking area, building a new boat ramp, improving the existing picnic shelter, installing a pre-cast concrete picnic shelter and latrine.
The open-house celebration will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Fresno Chapter of WU will provide a barbecue at noon.
