The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Beaver Creek Landscape Management Project is now available for review and public comment. The document is available on the Custer National Forest's website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r1/custer. Copies and maps are also available for review at the Ashland Ranger District on Highway 212 in Ashland.
The Beaver Creek project area is approximately 17 miles east of Ashland and north of Highway 212 in Powder River County. The Ashland Ranger District on the Custer National Forest is proposing to treat about 7,000 acres by mechanical means and 8,000 acres with prescribed fire.
Project objectives include increasing fire resiliency throughout the project area by reducing high fuel loads, and responding to Forest Plan direction to encourage activities that maintain or enhance a variety of successional vegetative stages. The DEIS discloses the environmental impacts of the proposed vegetation treatments, as well as the effects of the No Action alternative.
The 45-day public comment period for the DEIS began Oct. 15 with the publication of the Notice of Availability in the Federal Register.
Hard copy, electronic, and oral comments may be submitted.
