Former Montanan James King gave me the heads up that two Missouri hunters were the first to take deer in that state using atlatls. The Missouri Department of Conservation wrote up a story about the first hunter.
This was the first year the use of the weapon was allowed. You may remember that the Montana Legislature wrestled with the issue this past session when a bill was introduced to legalize atlatls as a way to take big game. Eventually the bill died, but not before attracting a lot of attention.
Atlatls are like long arrows propelled by a wooden throwing shaft. The weapons predate the bow and arrow.
