Missoula man wins Smith River permit in lottery

  • Updated

Stuart Goldberg, 43, from Missoula, is the 2013 Smith River “Super Permit” winner, providing him a launch permit good for any date he chooses.

Goldberg works in conservation real estate development and is a board member of the Clark Fork Coalition. He has applied for a permit through the regular lottery system 13 times and has been awarded only one permit two years ago.

This year, 853 individuals purchased a total of 1,808 Super Permit chances for a total of $9,040. The cost of one “chance” is $5.

Revenue from the sale of Super Permit chances is used for the protection and enhancement of the Smith River State Park and River Corridor.

Applicants who were unsuccessful in getting a Smith River permit this year can call the Smith River Reservation Line at 406-454-5861 from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, to request any remaining launches or canceled permits.
