30 years ago the Montana Centennial Cattle Drive put ranching in the spotlight

In September of 1989, on a Saturday morning in Billings, a long stream of 2,812 cattle, 208 covered wagons, 3,337 horses and 2,581 people began flowing down the asphalt of Main Street in the Heights.

In September of 1989, a cattle drive was held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Montana's statehood. The Great Montana Centennial Cattle Drive, which included more than 2,800 cattle, traveled 60 miles from Roundup to Billings through the course of six days.
