The man charged with robbing a front desk clerk at the Northern Hotel on Thursday night didn’t want to make things too difficult for police, apparently.
Before ducking back across the street to the nearby Crystal Lounge, Daniel Kenneth Baker, 39, told the clerk to "call the police" and that he "would be at the Crystal,” charging documents state.
Baker, who is charged with felony robbery, made an initial appearance on Friday in Yellowstone County Justice Court. Bond was set at $15,000 and a GPS monitor is required should he be released.
Baker had been pacing in front of the downtown bar for two to three hours, a bartender later told police. He’d come inside the Crystal at one point to order coffee with cream and three sugars.
The Crystal Lounge, at 101 N. Broadway, is directly across First Avenue North from the Northern Hotel.
When Baker went into the hotel, charges allege, he held a hand in his pocket, told the clerk he had a gun, and was given between $170 and $180 in cash.
The clerk did as Baker suggested and called police after he left. When officers arrested Baker, they found no gun on him. Asked where he got a wad of cash that was in his pocket, Baker replied, "‘I do not want to say,'" charging documents state.
