Numerous avalanche classes are being offered during the next two months in southwest Montana. A calendar with detailed information is available at the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center Web site at www.mtavalanche.com.
Here is a list of classes with information on how they differ.
Basic avalanche awareness lectures are free and open to the public. Topics covered include: avalanche terrain recognition, the affect weather has on avalanche hazard, the development of the mountain snowpack, decision-making skills, and basic search-and-rescue procedures.

Avalanche courses with field sessions usually involve classroom lectures and one or two field sessions. Unless noted, a fee is charged for these classes. The classes will be held:
Jan. 21, MMA Teen Avalanche Course from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a field session on Saturday, Jan. 24. This is for middle and high school students who are skiing the ridge at Bridger Bowl or accessing the backcountry. Contact Erin at 522-0659 for more detailed information.
