In the early 1990s, a group of unheralded chemists gave the world one of the greatest gifts since penicillin: A cheap, effective treatment for a skunk-sprayed dog.

Here it is again, just in case the unthinkable happens to a member of your kennel.

If a skunk has rendered your dog unfit for human companionship, use this tested recipe to neutralize the odor.

Hunters who have had to drive long distances with a skunk-sprayed dog - or ANY distance, for that matter - will understand the potential benefits of carrying these ingredients in their vehicles at all times.

• Mix 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap.

• Apply the mixture to the dog.

• Put the dog on a leash and take it for a walk upwind of your least favorite neighbors. Leave the mixture on the dog for at least five minutes before rinsing.

• Then breathe easy.
