Local amateur radio operators will participate in the Museum Ships Weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Naval Reserve Center.
The Yellowstone Radio Club is inviting the public to attend while operators make contact with submarines, aircraft carriers, battleships and other crafts from around the world.
The radio operators use the amateur band waves from retired maritime vessels, both military and commercial to enable the amateur community to contact historic museum entities and receive written confirmation of the contact.
The event provides radio operators worldwide access to these historic vessels and the hams operating from the vessels enjoy contacting each other and passing along frequencies where other ships are operating.
Many of the ships have /their original radio equipment restored to operating condition by the hams who operate during the event, and it is always a bonus to make a contact where one or both ends are using communications technology dating back several decades, particularly in Morse code.
